More Chickens

So I went over to the local chicken joint and spent a half hour talking to the chicken dude. I learned a lot and really think I'm going to do this though later in the Summer when I'm done traveling and when the kids are home. Learned that you can't just get one and that three is the number I should be thinking about. Also learned that the fancy house you see in the below picture isn't cheap. But the chickens are; they are only about $20 a bird.

I have to say, I'm strangely stoked.

we had ducklings at easter and i could NOT believe the amount of poop they had going on. SICK. we won't be getting anymore farmy animals ever again.

Apparently backyard chicken raising is a growing trend. This article from the Washington Post is about how supermarket eggs taste the same as backyard eggs, but I'm sure you'll skip over that point and focus on the hilarity of these two paragraphs:

Once folks get their chicks from Wood, many of them turn to Rob Ludlow, co-author of "Raising Chickens for Dummies" and the owner of BackYardChickens.com (motto: a chicken in every yard!), the largest online forum for noncommercial chicken keepers. He has seen his membership double in the past year, to 50,000.

The trend is easy to understand. Chickens don't cost much to feed. They are also funny, and you should never underestimate the value of livestock that makes you laugh. And, of course, there's that steady stream of eggs.
