No Hitters

I've been fortunate enough to catch both of this year's no hitters with the Little Boy and I have to say that I'm not sure if there's anything more exciting in all of sports, short of a championship game or some sort of series finale.

The one thing I've always wanted to see in-person is a no hitter; I've never even come close. The tension of the last few innings is singular, regardless of your feelings towards the team or player. I'm neither a White Sox nor an Angeles fan, but last night I sure was pulling for Jared Weaver. As was the Little Boy.

Not sure what it is about the no hitter - in this day and age they've almost become commonplace - but there's something about them that's indescribably transcendent.

Anyone out there ever see one in-person??

I saw Dave Stewart throw a no-hitter against the Jays at SkyDome in 1990. Both teams were good, every game was meaningful, and the Jays and A's were big rivals then (see 1989 ALCS). I couldn't believe that by the end of the game Jays fans were rooting for Stewart. Might have had something to do with Dave Stieb's near no-nos.

Best no-hitter of all time? Jim Abbott back when we lived in New York. It was the same day as Michigan's opener in 1993. We were with the Michigan crowd at that sports bar in Tribeca.
